Coccoloba pubescens Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 1007. 1759.
["Habitat in America."] Sp. Pl. ed. 2, 1: 523 (1762). RCN: 2881.
Lectotype (Howard, Fl. Lesser Antilles 4: 133. 1988): [icon] " Scortea arbor Americana, amplissimis foliis, aversa parte nervis extantibus hirsutie ferruginea refertis " in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 222, f. 8. 1692; Almag. Bot.: 38. 1696. - Voucher: Herb. Sloane 98: 23; 101: 196 (BM-SL).
Current name: Coccoloba pubescens L. ( Polygonaceae).
Note: Fawcett & Rendle (in J. Bot. 51: 123. 1913) provided an extensive discussion but did not indicate a type, but later (Fl. Jamaica 3: 118. 1914) indicated a type in BM (presumably material in Herb. Plukenet that was not seen by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name). See discussion by Howard (in J. Arnold Arbor. 38: 229. 1957).
