Cistus pilosus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 528. 1753.
"Habitat Monspelii." RCN: 3921.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Burser XXIV: 66 (UPS); [icon] in Clusius, Rar. Pl. Hist. 1: 74. 1601.
Current name: Helianthemum violaceum (Cav.) Pers. ( Cistaceae).
Note: Jafri (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 48: 22. 1977) indicated 689.55 (LINN) as type but this collection lacks the relevant Species Plantarum number (i.e. “25”) and was a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. López González (in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 50: 40, 45. 1990) argued that Helianthemum pilosum Mill, is not based on C. pilosus L., making H. pilosum (L.) Pers. a later homonym of Miller’s name. He follows Sampaio (in Bol. Soc. Brot., sér . 2, 7: 132. 1931) in regarding the correct name for Linnaeus’ plant to be H. violaceum (Cav.) Pers. There are also problems in that at least some of the original material is identifiable as Fumana .
