Crescentia cujete Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 626. 1753.
"Habitat in Virginiae, Jamaicae, Brasiliae apricis." RCN: 4531.
Lectotype (Wijnands, Bot. Commelins: 50. 1983): [icon] "Cucurbitifera arbor, subrotundis foliis confertis, fructu ovali, seminibus cordatis, massula nigra inclusis" in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 171, f. 2. 1692; Almag. Bot.: 124. 1696. - Typotype: Herb. Sloane 100: 8 (BM-SL) .
Generitype of Crescentia Linnaeus.
Current name: Crescentia cujete L. ( Bignoniaceae).
Note: Gentry (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 60: 831. 1974) originally proposed 779.1 (LINN), a Patrick Browne collection not received by Linnaeus until 1758, as type but it is ineligible. Wijnands’ 1983 choice of the Plukenet plate was rejected by Reveal (in Taxon 41: 145. 1992) as it corresponded with Linnaeus’ unnamed var. δ . Reveal argued that the name was based on a Plumier plate depicting Amphitecna latifolia (Mill.) A.H. Gentry, and proposed the Linnaean name for conservation with the Browne specimen as conserved type. However, the Committee for Spermatophyta (in Taxon 43: 274. 1994) ruled that Wijnands’ type choice was valid, rendering Reveal’s proposal unnecessary.
