Cucurbita citrullus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1010. 1753.
"Habitat in Apulia, Calabria, Sicilia." RCN: 7327.
Type not designated.
Original material: Herb. Burser XVII: 101 (UPS); [icon] in Bauhin & Cherler, Hist. Pl. Univ. 2: 235, 236. 1651.
Current name: Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Mansf. ( Cucurbitaceae).
Note: Bailey (in Gentes Herb. 2: 79. 1929; 2: 185. 1930) reproduced the protologue, and noted the existence of material in LINN. Jeffrey (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Cucurbitaceae: 47. 1967), followed by some later authors, designated 1151.5 (LINN) as lectotype, but this collection lacks the relevant Species Plantarum number (i.e. “5”) and was a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. Jeffrey subsequently (in Kew Bull. 34: 791. 1980) recognised this, and observed that the LINN sheet should perhaps be regarded as a neotype. However, as original material is in existence, this would be contrary to Art. 9.11.
