Clitoria mariana Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 753. 1753.
"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 5370.
Neotype ( Nguyên Van Thuân in Aubréville & Leroy, Fl. Cambodge Laos Viêt-Nam 17: 48. 1979): Herb. Linn. No. 902.4 (LINN) .
Current name: Clitoria mariana L. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).
Note: There appear to be no original elements extant for this name. Reveal, however (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 92: 164. 1986), designated Clayton 108 (BM) as lectotype. Linnaeus did not cite Gronovius’ Flora Virginica account in the protologue (but later cited an account from Flora Virginica, ed. 2: 111. 1762 in the entry for the same species in Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1026. 1763). The Clayton specimen cannot be an original element since it was not indirectly cited in the protologue. Although it could now be treated as a neotype (Art. 9.8), such a choice is pre-dated by that of Nguyên Van Thuân, whose indication of 902.4 (LINN) as “type” is similarly accepted as a neotypification.
