Codon royenii Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 292. 1767.
RCN: 3012.
Holotype (Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 36. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 535.1 [icon] (LINN) .
Generitype of Codon Linnaeus.
Current name: Codon royenii L. ( Hydrophyllaceae).
Note: The name appears to be based solely on a drawing and description sent to Linnaeus by David van Royen in a letter dated 19 Feb 1767. Linnaeus refers to "Roy. mss", reinforced by his chosen epithet. Royen’s drawing is preserved in Linnaeus’ herbarium (sheet 535.1), and was consequently referred to as the holotype by Jarvis & al. Retief & al. (in Fl. Pl. Africa 59: 114. 2005) followed Jarvis & al. and suggest that the original material was probably collected by J.A. Auge in 1761-1762 on Hop’s expedition to Namaqualand and Southern Namibia.
