Cenchrus muricatus Linnaeus, Mantissa Plantarum Altera: 302. 1771.

"Habitat in India orientali. Koenig." RCN: 7583.

Neotype (Renvoize in Cafferty & al. in Taxon 49: 249. 2000): India. Madras, Tamil Nadu, South Arcot, Chidambarum, Kille, Anuvampattu, Venugopal in RHT No. 21360 (K; iso- RHT).

Current name: Trachys muricata (L.) Trin. ( Poaceae).

Note: Gould (in Dassanayake & al, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 8: 441. 1994) stated "Type from India. Koenig", but indicated no specimen location. Herb. Linn. No. 1217.4 is annotated " Cenchrus muricatus " by Linnaeus, and is also a König collection. However, it is dated “1777”, post-dating publication of the name for which it therefore cannot be original material. In the absence of any extant original material, a neotype was chosen by Renvoize.
