Cistus canus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 525. 1753.
"Habitat in G. Narbonensi, Hispania."
RCN: 3902.
Lectotype ( López González in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 50: 52. 1992): Herb. Burser XXIV: 67 (UPS) .
Current name: Helianthemum oelandicum (L.) DC. subsp. incanum (Willk.) G. Lopez ( Cistaceae).
Note: Janchen (in Österr . Bot. Zeitschr. 59: 225. 1909) published a photograph (Abb. 2) of a specimen of Cistus canus from the Linnaean herbarium (689.35, LINN) which he described as "Ein Originalexemplar". Kupatadze (in Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 16: 142. 1979) treated this collection as the lectotype, but it lacks a Species Plantarum number (i.e. “12”), and is a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and not original material for the name. See extensive comments on the elements involved in this name by López González (l.c.: 52-53).
