Conferva gelatinosa Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1166. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae fontibus praestantissimis limpidissimis." RCN: 8387.

Lectotype (Irvine in Spencer & al. in Taxon, in press): [icon] " Conferva fontana nodosa, spermatis ranarum instar lubrica, major & fusca " in Dillenius, Hist. Musc.: 36, t. 7, f. 42. 1741. - Voucher: Herb. Dillenius (OXF) .

Current name: Batrachospermum gelatinosum (L.) DC. ( Batrachospermaceae).

Note: See extensive discussion by Compère (in Belgian J. Bot.: 124: 21-26. 1991) who did not, however, make a definitive type choice. Entwisle & Foard (in Austral. Syst. Bot. 10: 352. 1997) designated Dillenian material (OXF) as lectotype but this was not seen by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name.
