Cracca villosa Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 752. 1753.
"Habitat in India." RCN: 5563.
Basionym of: Galega villosa (L.) L. (1759) .
Lectotype (Gillett in Kew Bull. 13: 121. 1958; Ali in Biologia (Lahore) 10: 25. 1964): Herb. Hermann 1: 31, No. 299 (BM-000621337) .
Current name: Tephrosia villosa (L.) Pers. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).
Note: Cracca Linnaeus, nom. rej. in favour of Cracca Benth., but without a listed type.
Cracca villosa was treated as the generitype by Britton & Brown, Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 2: 372. 1913 (see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 366. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 176. 1929) of C. purpurea L.
Gillett indicated Herb. Hermann material (BM) as type. Although there is material in two separate volumes, it appears to have been part of a single gathering. Consequently, his is accepted as the first typification (Art. 9.15), with the choice subsequently restricted by Ali.
