Cassia falcata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 377. 1753.
"Habitat in America." RCN: 2965.
Neotype (Reveal in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 466. 1997): Browne, Herb. Linn. No. 528.13 (LINN) .
Current name: Senna occidentalis (L.) Link ( Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae).
Note: A specimen in Herb. Linn. (No. 528.12, LINN), identifiable as C. fistula L., although annotated “falcata” by Linnaeus, lacks glands at the bases of the petioles and is thereby fundamentally at odds with Linnaeus’ nomen specificum legitimum which states "glandula baseos petiolorum". This specimen could not possibly have been that upon which the validating diagnosis was based and is therefore not original material for C. falcata . In the absence of any other original material, Reveal designated a neotype.
