Cleome pentaphylla Linnaeus, Flora Jamaicensis: 18. 1759.

"Habitat [in Jamaica.]" RCN: 4894.

Lectotype (Iltis in Brittonia 12: 284. 1960): Herb. Linn. No. 850.4 (LINN) .

Current name: Cleome gynandra L. ( Capparaceae).

Note: Although Fawcett & Rendle (Fl. Jamaica 3: 229. 1914) indicated material in LINN as type, they did not distinguish between sheets 850.2, 850.3 and 850.4 (which are evidently not part of a single gathering so Art. 9.15 does not apply). Some authors, including Elffers & al. (in Hubbard & Milne-Redhead, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Capparidaceae: 18. 1964), have believed this to be a superfluous name for C. gynandra L. (1753), stemming from the mistaken belief that C. pentaphylla dated from 1763 (Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 938). The two names are, however, heterotypic synonyms.
