Commelina erecta Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 41. 1753.

"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 349.

Lectotype (Clarke in De Candolle in Monogr. Phanerog. 3: 181. 1881): [icon] " Commelina erecta, ampliore subcaeruleo flore " in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 1: 91, t. 77, f. 88. 1732.

Current name: Commelina erecta L. ( Commelinaceae).

Note: Some authors (e.g. Fernald in Rhodora 42: 436. 1940) have accepted Clarke (1881) as having typified the name (though this is open to doubt) using the cited Dillenian plate, though Hunt (in McVaugh, Fl. Novo-Galiciana 13: 144. 1993) has more recently thrown doubt on the taxonomic identity of this element. Morton (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 60: 183. 1967) treated 65.6 (LINN) as the type but the identity of this, too, has been questioned (see Rao & al. in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 60: 360. 1968).
