Generitype of Chenopodium Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 137. 1929).

Current name: Chenopodium album L. ( Chenopodiaceae).

Note: Chenopodium rubrum L. was treated as the generitype of Chenopodium by Britton & Brown, Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 2: 9. 1913 (see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 365. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Hitchcock’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 137. 1929) of C. album .

Aellen (in Verb. Naturf. Ges. Basel 51(2): 43-65. 1930) discussed the name in some detail and illustrated (p. 50) sheet 313.8 (LINN), but did not appear to choose it explicitly as the type. See notes on the varietal identity of the type by Hansen & Pedersen (in Bot. Tidsskr. 63: 226. 1968).
