Cometes surattensis Linnaeus, Mantissa Plantarum: 39. 1767.

"Habitat in Suratte." RCN: 995.

Lectotype (Gilbert in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 36. 1993): [icon] " Cometes surattensis " in Burman, Fl. Indica: 39, t. 15, f. 5. 1768.

Generitype of Cometes Linnaeus.

Current name: Cometes surattensis L. ( Caryophyllaceae).

Note: In 1767, Linnaeus simultaneously published two different epithets for this taxon: C. alterniflora (in Syst. Nat., ed. 12, 2: 127) and C. surattensis (in Mant. Pl.: 39). The latter name has been treated as the generitype, and is the name in current use. Rechinger (Fl. Iranica 144: 23. 1980) indicated Garcin material (G) as type but Linnaeus would not have seen this collection and it is not part of the original material.
