Clematis flammula Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 544. 1753.

"Habitat Monspelii, Jenae, inque Rhetiae sepibus." RCN: 4036.

Lectotype (Brandenburg in Jarvis & al. in Taxon 54: 469. 2005): [icon] " Flammula " in Dodoëns, Stirp. Hist. Pempt., ed. 2: 404. 1616.

Current name: Clematis flammula L. ( Ranunculaceae).

Note: The original elements that contributed to Linnaeus’ concept of C. flammula were taxonomically diverse, and included C. vitalba L., C. maritima L., and possibly C. chinensis Osbeck, as well as C. flammula . Qaiser (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 108: 5. 1984) designated 712.12 (LINN) as the type but unfortunately this collection is identifiable as C. vitalba . Brandenburg rejected Qaiser’s typification, on the grounds of conflict of the specimen with the protologue, in favour of a Dodoëns plate corresponding with usage of the name.
