Clematis viticella Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 543. 1753.

"Habitat in Italiae, Hispaniae sepibus." RCN: 4029.

Lectotype (Serov in Bot. Zhurn. 73: 1740. 1988): Herb. Linn. No. 712.4 (LINN) .

Current name: Clematis viticella L. ( Ranunculaceae).

Note: Serov (1988) appears to have made the first formal choice of type but various other type choices have been proposed. Rechinger (in Fl. Iran. 171: 230. 1992) indicated 712.3 (LINN) as type, but this material is in any case a later addition to the herbarium and not original material for the name. Johnson ( Släktet Klematis: 674. 1997) noted various of the original elements but similarly indicated what is presumably 712.3 (LINN) as type. Brandenburg & al. (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 135: 13-23. 2001) provided an extensive discussion of the typification of this name, illustrating many of the original elements involved. However, they were unaware of Serov’s earlier choice of material in LINN as lectotype, which pre-dates their choice of Clifford material (BM).
