Pachydactylus maculatus albomarginatus Hewitt, 1932

Annals of the Natal Museum; 7(1):121; Plate VI, Figs. 6–7.

Current name: Pachydactylus oculatus Hewitt, 1927 (fide De Waal, 1978)

Syntypes (3): PEM R7625, R7632, R7634 (formerly AMG 6368); Norvals Pont, Colesberg, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa; Mr. B. Peers, ‘ 23 June 1930 ’.

Remarks: The description illustrates two specimens (PEM R7625 and R7632). No date was provided in the original publication, but the label reads ‘ 23 June 1930 ’. All specimens are in good overall condition, but PEM R7625 has a detached tail. Loveridge (1947) placed P. oculatus and P. m. albomarginatus in the synonymy of P. maculatus, although De Waal (1978) regarded P. m. albomarginatus as a synonym of P. oculatus . He also reported, in error (p. 22, 24) that the types in the AMG were missing. Examination of the types confirms that they are morphologically similar to P. oculatus .
