Widely distributed and cultivated in tropical America, from Trinidad to northeastern Argentina and Brazil (Govaerts et al. 2010, Sobral et al. 2010). Considered extinct in the State of Pernambuco, with no records in the last 40 years.
Trees 4–7 m tall. This species differs from other species of Plinia by having leaves 7.5–10.0 × 3–4 cm, a flat or raised midvein on the adaxial laminar surface, rotund bracts, linear bracteoles, the raceme terminated by a dichasium and the calyx closed in flower bud, tearing open irregularly.
