Material examined. None.

Distribution. China (Taiwan); Russia; Japan; South Korea.

Remarks. The descriptions of male genitalia of this species vary in different works (Miyatake, 1958; Sasaji, 1971; Park & Yoon, 1994; Kuzuetsov, 1997; Ren et al., 2009) hence it is possible that cryptic species within this species exist.

Ren et al. (2009) presented photos of S. hareja with remarkable emargination and distinct membranous appendage at the apex of penis, which differ from all the other descriptions. Based on the examination of that specimen and the revised diagnostic characters, we consider it as a new species, S. variabilis sp. nov., which is described in this study.
