Mycale (Mycale) orenzii (Schulze) (sensu Li 2008)
Mycale (Mycale) orenzii (Schulze); Li 2008: 295.
This name is listed in the Checklist of China seas (Liu (ed.) 2008), the sponges of which were assembled by Li Jinhe. It is currently a nomen nudum as there is no species ‘ orenzii Schulze’ and there is no description. This is an obvious misspelling, with the closest name that is likely meant is Esperia lorenzii Schmidt, 1862 from the Mediterranean, now considered a junior synonym of Mycale (Aegogropila) syrinx (Schmidt, 1862) . If the mistake indeed refers to Schmidt’s name then the identity is a misapplication as Mediterranean species do not occur in Chinese waters. It is also likely a member of the subgenus Mycale (Aegogropila), not of Mycale (Mycale) .
