Distribution in South America: Atlantic Ocean, Brazil to Argentina, from 0º to 62ºS (Totton 1954; Alvariño 1971, 1981; Pugh 1999; Migotto et al. 2002; Silveira & Morandini 2011).

Habitat: neritic and oceanic species. Rare, found in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters (Pugh et al. 1997; Pugh & Gasca 2009).
