Taxonomic history. Uchida (1940a) transferred this species from Cryptus to Idiolispa Förster, 1869; then, Townes et al. (1965) transferred it from Idiolispa to Litochila Momoi & Okamoto, 1965 .

Current taxonomy. Litochila carbonaria (Smith, 1874) ( Ichneumonidae: Cryptinae: Aptesini).

Type number. Type 3b.428. Specimen # NHMUK010634917

Type status. Holotype.

Sex. Female.

Type locality. Hyôgo Prefecture, Honshû, Japan.

Label data. First label, ‘ Type /CM’ (round label, with red margin; first line printed and second line handwriting); second label, ‘B.M. TYPE /HYM./3.b.428’ (square label; first and second lines printed and third line handwriting); third label, ‘Hiogo/ Japan.’ (square label; first line handwriting and second line printed); fourth label, ‘ Cryptus /carbonarius/ Type. Smith.’ (square label; handwriting).

Condition. Good; but the following parts lost: left antenna, fourth and fifth tarsomeres of left fore leg, fifth tarsomere of right hind leg, left hind leg after second tarsomere, right fore wing.
