Diagnosis. Palaina gedeana is characterized by a cylindrical, closely ribbed, dextral shell with an operculum with a high spiral ridge on the outer surface.

Shell (Fig. 6, 46; Table 2). Dextral; cylindrical with conical early whorls; with 5–5.5 whorls separated by a deep suture; protoconch smooth; teleoconch with oblique ribs (58–79 on penultimate whorl; fewer on the last whorl); with or without distinct spiral striae between the ribs; whitish; subtranslucent; last whorl rounded, with an indistinct ventral constriction, with a ventrolateral left protrusion; aperture almost circular; upper insertion of the peristome slightly ascending towards aperture; insertions of the peristome connected by a distinct callus; peristome hardly expanded, slightly thickened, doubled or not doubled; without lamellae or folds; rimate; operculum thin, corneous, circular, multispiral, with a spiral ridge on the outer surface and an arcuate ridge on the inner surface. Shell height 2.1–2.9 mm, shell diameter 1.15–1.55 mm.

Remarks. The protrusion of the last whorl is more distinct in specimens from East Java.

Habitat. In leaf litter in primary and secondary forests on volcanic soils at 1400–3000 m a.s.l.

Distribution (Fig. 18). Palaina gedeana is known from Java and Bali (Vermeulen & Whitten 1998).
