Discussion: Reviewed by Ottenwalder (2001). Includes Antillogale and Atopogale; see Patterson (1962:2) and Varona (1974:6). Besides the two extant species, two extinct species have been described from Cuba (Giant Solenodon) and Hispaniola ( Antillogale marcanoi Patterson, 1962); see Morgan and Woods (1986). Remains of Solenodon marcanoi have been found in a horizon of "Late Pleistocene or Recent" age (Patterson, 1962).
