Type Locality: "Tokiwa Mura (Maneki, about 900 m altitude, foot of Mt. Gaki, Japan Alps), Kita-Azumi Gun, Nagano Pref., Central Honsyû [= Honshu], Japan ".
Vernacular Names: Azumi Shrew.
Synonyms: Sorex (Sorex) shiroumanus Imaizumi 1954 .
Distribution: Montane forests of C Honshu (Japan).
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Subgenus Sorex . Imaizumi (1970 b) reported that hosonoi occurs sympatrically with shinto and therefore should be considered as separate species (Corbet, 1978 c). Ohdachi et al. (1997 a, 2001) demonstrated that the species is genetically related to minutissimus .
