Hemisciera maculipennis (de Laporte, 1832)
Cicada maculipennis de Laporte 1832: 412 . (French Guiana and Brazil)
Cicada versicolor Brullé 1835 (in Audouin & Brullé): Plate v, Fig. 1.
Cicada sumptuosa Blanchard 1840: 165 .
Fidicina floslofia Walker 1858a: 15 . (Ega, Brazil)
REMARKS. The species is medium sized (body length 31-34 mm) with a tawny and piceous body, the head pronotal collar mesothorax and posterior abdomen can be green in fresher specimens. The bright green basal area of the fore wings and bright red on the basal area of the hind wings make the species very easy to identify.
DISTRIBUTION. The species has been recorded from Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, and Peru (Metcalf 1963a; Sanborn 2011a; 2013; 2018b). Jacobi (1907; 1951) reported the species from Chanchamayo. The range was recently reduced when Argentina and Bolivia were excluded from the distribution of the species correcting the misinterpretation (Metcalf 1963a) of the original resource (Sanborn 2019b). The distribution in Peru supports this action as the records are from the middle of Peru, some 900 km from the Bolivian border.
