Cephalophus niger Gray 1846
Cephalophus niger Gray 1846, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 1, 18: 165.
Type Locality: " Guinea " but apparently Ghana, Shama (see comments).
Vernacular Names: Black Duiker.
Distribution: Rainforest zone, in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria (west of lower Niger River), Sierra Leone, and Togo. No record from Benin.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: The type of niger came from the Leiden Museum, one of a series from Chama (= Shama) and Dabocrom, Ghana, including the syntypes of pluto. Only the specimens from Dabocrom were retained in Leiden (Jentink, 1892) so presumably the type is from Shama.
