Discussion: Meijaard and Groves (2004) were not convinced that Cervus javanicus Osbeck, 1765 is a mouse-deer and preferred to date the name from Tragulus javanicus (Gmelin, 1788) . Until their evidence is published, the older name is retained here. Tragulus javensis Pallas, 1779 is available and predates Moschus javanicus Gmelin, 1788 . The two names are objective synonyms because they are both based on the description of a specimen by Pallas (1777, fasc. 12, p. 18), but javensis has not been noticed and is a nomen oblitum.
