Type Locality: Liberia, "the river St. Pauls, a stream that rises in the mountains of Guinea, and passing through the Dey country and Liberia, empties into the Atlantic to the north of Cape Messurado".
Vernacular Names: Pygmy Hippopotamus.

Distribution: Sierra Leone to Côte d’Ivoire; SC Nigeria (extinct?).

Discussion: First described as Hippopotamus minor Morton, 1844 (Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Phila., 2:14).
