Bupleurum villosum Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 238. 1753.
"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 7649.
Replaced synonym of: Hermas depauperata L. (1771), nom. illeg.
Lectotype (Burtt in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 53. 1993): [icon] " Perfoliata foliis oblongis, sinuosis, subtus incanis " in Burman, Rar. Afric. Pl.: 196, t. 71, f. 2. 1739.
Current name: Hermas villosa (L.) Thunb. ( Apiaceae).
Note: Burtt (in Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 48: 213. 1991) suggested that 1227.1 (LINN) was probably the specimen upon which Hermas depauperata was based. However, H. depauperata is an illegitimate replacement name in Hermas for Bupleurum villosum L. and homotypic with it. The material in LINN appears to be a post-1753 addition to the collection and not original material for B. villosum . For this reason, Burtt (1993) typified the name on the cited Burman illustration (though f. 1, and its corresponding polynomial, was regrettably cited in error for f. 2).
