Borbonia cordata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 707. 1753.

"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 5185.

Lectotype (Dahlgren in Bot. Not. 116: 275. 1963): Herb. Clifford: 494, Borbonia 1 (BM-000647673) .

Generitype of Borbonia Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 174. 1929).

Current name: Aspalathus cordata (L.) R. Dahlgren ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).

Note: Campbell & Van Wyk (in S. African J. Bot. 67: 127. 2001) appear to treat this name as a synonym of Rafnia triflora (L.) Thunb. (syn. Crotalaria triflora L.). They cite B. cordata as published in 1753, but give the page number as 994 (which corresponds with the Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 994. 1762 account of this species). They quote "e Cap. b. spei" (but both ed. 1 and ed. 2 accounts give “Aethiopia”) and state "LINN s.n. (LINN, microfiche, lecto., here designated)". In this, they presumably intend 890.6 (LINN) annotated " Borbonia 3 cordata" by Linnaeus. However, they give no indication of using the ed. 1 and ed. 2 names in different ways, nor of rejecting Dahlgren’s choice of type.
