Briza minor Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 70. 1753.

"Habitat in Helvetia, Italia." RCN: 591.

Lectotype (Hubbard in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Gramineae 1: 53. 1970): Herb. Linn. No. 88.1 (LINN) .

Current name: Briza minor L. ( Poaceae).

Note: Conservation of Briza with B. minor as a conserved type was proposed by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 556. 1992). However, in discussion within the Committee for Spermatophyta, it became clear that the proposed type would conflict with the infrageneric nomenclature adopted by Tzvelev, and so the Committee did not approve conservation (see Taxon 44: 612. 1995).

Briza minor had been treated as the generitype of Briza by Nash (in Britton & Brown, Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 1: 250. 1913) (see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 362. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Hitchcock’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 120. 1929) of B. media L.
