Discussion: Subgenus Coelomys . A distinct montane species endemic to the mountains of W Sumatra (Musser, 1986; Musser and Newcomb, 1983). Listed by Chasen (1940) as a species of Mycteromys, which also contained the Javan M. vulcani, the closest relative of M. crociduroides . Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial 12S rRNA sequences clustered M. crociduroides with M. pahari (Catzeflis and Denys, 1992; Chevret et al., 2003), reinforcing the alliance indicated by morphological traits (Chevret et al., 2003; J. T. Marshall, Jr., 1977 b) – both are in subgenus Coelomys . Member of the suite of murines endemic to Sumatra (Musser, 1986; also see account of Maxomys hylomyoides).
