Synonyms: Mastacomys brazenori Ride 1956; Mastacomys castaneus (Higgins and Petterd 1884); Mastacomys mordicus Thomas 1922; Mastacomys wombeyensis Ride 1956 .

Distribution: Australia; modern records from E New South Wales, E Victoria, and Tasmania, but late Pleistocene-Holocene fragments indicated range once included Kangaroo Isl, Carrieton, and Naracoorte in South Australia (Archer et al., 1984; Happold, 1995; Pledge, 1990; Robinson et al., 2000); see Menkhorst (1995 b) for the range in Victoria, and Rounsevell et al. (1991) for a summary of Tasmanian records.
