Distribution. Atlanto-Mediterranean (Bellan-Santini & Ruffo 2003; Christodoulou et al. 2013). The species was reported from Cyprus by Kocatas et al. (2001). In Vasiliko Bay (current study), it is considered to be a rare species (FI: 2.38 %).
Ecology. Maera hirondellei was found on rocks and stones at 32 m depth (Kocatas et al. 2001). In Vasiliko Bay it was found at 12 m depth in sandy substrate with 2.2 % organic matter. The station was in “good” ecological status according to the Bentix index.
