Bombus mendax latofasciatus Vogt, 1909
It is a mountain declining subspecies, spread in the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Range, between 1400 and 2150 m (Fig. 7) (Ornosa & Ortiz-Sánchez 2004, Santamaría et al. 2011). In the past, 69 individuals were recorded (Ornosa 1984; Castro pers. comm.).
B. mendax latofasciatus is a very rare (Fig. 3) and threatened subspecies (Table 2), only collected once in the last eight years in the Pyrenees, in the National Park Aigüestortes and St. Maurici lake (Ornosa & Torres 2009) and in the Cantabrian Range (Picos de Europa), where 15 individuals were collected in July, 2008 (Asturias, the Bastards, Jou) (Santamaría et al. 2011). It was assessed as Endangered (EN) in the IUCN Spanish Red List (Ornosa & Torres 2009).
