COMMENT: Formerly included in Spermophilus (= Citellus) by Hershkovitz, 1949, J. Mammal., 30:296. Bryant, 1945, Am. Midi. Nat., 33:374-375, considered Ammospermophilus a distinct genus. Recent biochemical and chromosomal data support Bryant's recognition of generic status; currently being revised by DJH.
