DISTRIBUTION: S.W. Siberia, Tuva, Transbaikalia (U.S. S. R.); N. and W. Mongolia; Heilungkiang and Inner Mongolia; formerly Manchuria (China).
COMMENT: Placed (with baibacina and himalayana) by Ellerman and Morrison-Scott, 1951:515, and Corbet, 1978:81, in bobak . Gromov et al., 1965:337-415, and Zimina, ed., 1978, [Marmots. Distribution and Ecology], "Nauka," Moscow, provided evidence of specific distinctness and included caliginosus in this species; see comment under baibacina . Nikol'skii, 1974, Zool. Zh., 53:436-444, analyzed contact between baibacina and sibirica in Tuva; Sokolov and Orlov, 1980:329, also indicated sympatry in N.W. Mongolia.
