Luciola melancholica Olivier 1913a: 417 . McDermott 1966: 109. Ballantyne & McLean, 1970: 267. Ballantyne & Lambkin 2013: 122.

Holotype. Female. NEW GUINEA: Iles Bertrand (MCSN).

Remarks. The holotype female was described with dark brown elytra and an orange pronotum with dark marginal markings. Ballantyne & Lambkin (2013) and Ballantyne & McLean (1970) addressed various species using both males and females having marginal dark markings on the pronotum, but were unable to resolve its identity. No males from the type locality of the Bertrand Islands have been located.
