Protohermes uniformis Banks

Protohermes uniformis Banks, 1931: 412 . Type locality: Malaysia (Sabah: Mt. Kinabalu).

Diagnosis. In appearance there are a pair of narrowly elongate black markings on posterolateral portions of vertex and a pair of rather narrow longitudinal black markings on pronotum. Genitalia of this species are characterized by the male ninth sternum with a pair of rather elongate and digitiform posterior lobes, the male ectoproct with broadly flattened apex, and the male tenth gonocoxite without posterodorsal inflation.

Description. Male. Body length 28 mm; forewing length 40 mm, hindwing length 33 mm.

Head (Fig. 6) yellow, vertex posterolaterally with a pair of narrowly elongate black markings; post-ocular spine absent. Compound eyes brown; ocelli yellow, medially margined black, lateral ocelli close to median ocellus. Antenna with scape and pedicle yellow, flagellum damaged (described as dark colored in original description). Mouthparts yellow; mandible with distal half black, maxillary palpi brown.

Thorax (Fig. 6) yellow; pronotum with a pair of narrow black longitudinal markings near lateral margins; meso- and metanota laterally pale brown. Thoracic pilosity white, much longer on meso- and meta thorax. Legs yellow, with short dense yellowish setae; tarsal claws pale reddish brown. Wings hyaline, with several whitish markings. Forewing slightly brownish, medially with several ovoid markings (currently faded and indistinct); pterostigmatic area pale yellow. Hindwing slightly brownish on distal half, immaculate. Veins yellowish brown to brown except for those in pale markings yellow. Rs 6-branched; MA bifurcate; 7 crossveins between R and Rs; anterior branch of MP 5-branched, posterior branch of MP 2-branched.

Abdomen brown. Ninth tergum (Fig. 41) subtrapezoidal, with shallowly and arcuately incised anterior margin and truncate posterior margin. Ninth sternum (Fig. 42) medially short, posterior margin deeply incised arcuate, forming a pair of elongate digitiform posterior lobes. Ninth gonostylus (Fig. 42) slender unguiform, directed posteriad in lateral view, with tip slightly incurved. Ectoproct (Figs. 41–43) band-like, ~3.5 times as long as ninth tergum, broadly flattened, slightly curved inward. Tenth gonocoxite (Fig. 44) arched, posteromedially with a fringe of long setae; lateral lobes digitiform, straightly directed posteriad.

Female. Unknown.

Type material. Holotype 3, MALAYSIA: Sabah: “B[ritish].N[orth]. Borneo, Mt. Kinabalu, Lumu Lumu, 5500 ft [= 1676 m], 9.IV.1929 / Protohermes uniformis Bks [= Banks], type /Ex F.M.S. Museum, B.M.1955-354/ Holotype ” (BMNH).
