Tribe Macrotomini (Macrotomina) Thomson, 1861

The tribe Macrotomini is divided into six subtribes; Macrotomina is composed of 168 species in 46 genera and is the only subtribe with known immature stages. The larva of Archodontes melanopus (Linnaeus, 1767), from the USA, was briefly described by Craighead (1915). The larva had been compared with Orthosoma Audinet-Serville, 1832 by Packard (1890). Based on the brief description, the larva of A. melanopus is characterized by having: integument smooth, shining with sparse setae; abdominal segments with retractile ambulatory ampullae not divided by a median impressed line; epistomal margin projected above clypeal base in two broadly triangular lobes; legs present.
