Centris clypeata Friese, 1899: 41 . Junior primary homonym of C. clypeata Lepeletier, 1841 . Junior synonym of C. nigrocaerulea Smith, 1854 (Snelling 1984) .
Type data: Friese (1899) had approximately one hundred specimens to describe this species, mainly from Orizaba, southeastern Mexico. The lectotype was designated by Vivallo (2020) which has the following data label: 11660 Mexiko [handwritten]\ Centris clypeata n. sp. ♂ [handwritten] det. Friese 1898 [printed]\ [light blue label] Lecto-type Centris clypeata Friese, 1899 des. F. Vivallo, 2017 [printed] (MNHP).
Type locality: Mexico: Veracruz state: Orizaba .
Comments: The male of this species is the only North American C. (Paracentris) ( sensu Zanella 2002) with blackish pubescence and yellow clypeal disc. This species was correctly interpreted by Snelling (1984) and Moure et al. (2007).
