ARGENTINA: Chaco: Parque Nacional Chaco, larvae # CH 00009a, CH 00009b1-b2, CH 0009c1-c2 [CPFE], in one nest (Antoniazzi et al. 2011); total of 7 larvae (6 at the third instar and 1 at the first instar stage), # CH 00009 a, CH 00009 b1-b2, CH 00009 c1-c2 [WPC], found free among the nest material in a nest belonging to a pair of saffron finches; none of them being in the subcutis of the nestlings, and only one observed on one of the nestlings, although also crawling free; all third instars incubated at room temperature to obtain the adults, identified using the keys of Couri (1999) and de Carvalho & Couri (2002); consensus sequences of the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) and ITS2 regions of three of the specimens collected submitted to GenBank [ITS1 Accession No. HQ834531; ITS2 Accession No. HQ834532] (Silvestri et al. 2011).

Note: Silvestri et al. (2011) state that a “further investigation is needed to determine whether Argentina is part of the historical range of P. downsi or, alternatively, represents a recent expansion of its range”. Independently of this work, Schühli et al. (2011) found adults of P. downsi with Malaise traps in PARAGUAY: Canindeyú: Reserva Natural del Bosque Mbaracayú, Jejuí-Mi, A.C.F. Costa leg., 29-III-9- IV-1996, 2 females; 11-17- IV-1996, 1 female; 1-8- V-1996, 1 female; 9-15- V-1996, 1 male, 1 female; 16-23- V-1996, 1 male, 1 female; 6-10- VII-1996, 1 female [MNHNP; PJSM].
