Metrotyphlus as a subgenus of Megatyphlus Coiffait, 1959: 328 .

Type species: Megatyphlus hervei Coiffait, 1957 . Original designation.

Diagnosis. Gular sutures confluent in anterior third of length of head capsule, from confluent point prolonged ahead by two short, divergent sutures; labrum dentate; antennae with 11 antennomeres, 5 slightly larger than 4 and 6, antennal club composed from 3 antennomeres; terminal antennomeres lacking sensorial appendages (phaneres); all tarsi with 2 tarsomeres. Genital armature of female distinct or indistinct.

Remarks. Metrotyphlus, together with Apotyphlus and Venezillotyphlus have tarsal formula 2-2-2. The genus has 2 subgenera differentiated by the structure of aedeagus and female genital armature. All balkanic species belong to the subgenus Agnotyphlus Coiffait, 1972 . The nominal subgenus includes four species in France, Italy and Switzerland.
