Sathrochthonius venezuelanus Muchmore, 1989 [NEW RECORD]

Sathrochthonius venezuelanus Muchmore, 1989: 251–253 .

Type locality: 9 km from Chivaton Hotel toward Kavanayén, La Gran Sabana, Bolívar, Venezuela .

Distribution: Colombia and Venezuela

Distribution in Colombia: Valle del Cauca: Dapa, Finca Los Pinares (3.5709; -76.6549)

Repository of Colombian material: ICN-APs- 220 (1 ♂) (this paper).

Remarks: Collection data as in label: 1898 masl; 29-Dec-2009; Jairo A. Moreno leg; in cloud forest. The specimen was part of an unpublished study on the Colombian Chthoniidae conducted by Benjamín Riveros and the first author of this paper. Sathrochthonius is composed of nine species, of which seven are distributed in Oceania and two in South America. This is an unusual record since the other South American species, S. pefauri Vitali-di Castri, 1974 is recorded only from Chile, and the holotype of S. venezuelanus is the only other known specimen in the Neotropics. This record results in a geographic extension of the distribution about 1700 km in a completely different ecosystem for S. venezuelanus .
