Neoschoengastia americana (Hirst)
Dorchester Co., Summerville, January 1936, ex Toxostoma rufum Linnaeus, coll. Wharton.
Neoschoengastia americana can be a significant pest of both wild and domestic turkeys. Larvae of N. americana are gregarious feeders and cause lesions on the skins of infested turkeys, especially free range birds (Everett et al. 1973). Crossley and Proctor (1971) reported N. americana from domestic turkeys, “grouse,” and T. rufum from the piedmont region of Georgia.
