Mesopotamichthys

A monospecific cyprinid genus with large scales and no barbels. The only species within the genus, Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi forms a well-distinct clade with Carasobarbus, Arabibarbus, Moroccan Ptercapoeta, and Atlantor reinii and is most likely related to the unstudied subterranean Caecocypris basimi from Iraq. They all belong to the Torini group, which is also widespread in tropical Asia and Africa.
