Distribution. Western Atlantic – Bermuda, North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil (from Pará to São Paulo) (Melo 1996; Barros et al. 1997a).

Ecological notes. On sand and mud bottoms and in mangroves, also in brackish water. Rarely in the open sea. Shallow waters to 25 m (Melo 1996).
