STATUS: CITES - Appendix I (South American populations only); U.S. ESA - Endangered as C. b. boliviano; IUCN - Indeterminate.

SYNONYMS: boliviano; chinchilla (Lichtenstein, 1830), intermedia, major.

COMMENTS: Pine et al. (1979:362-363) included brevicaudata in lanigera without comment.
